ImageIf you were at the Tampa Bay Lightning game March 6, you know exactly what I’m talking about when I say, “Thank you Lightning!” over and over again. During United Way Night, the Lightning organization ran United Way messages during breaks. They put our logo on the Lightning Vision and on the LED display boards that surround the forum. They gave us a table in the lobby to promote Art of Giving and the work that we do. They gave some children from the Boys and Girls Club, wearing LIVE UNITED shirts, a thrilling ride in the Zamboni. They took us down on the ice so we could honor our Spirit of Tampa Bay winners, Million Dollar Donors and Community Champion and they recognized them on the Lightning Vision. We even got to meet Captain Vinny Lecavalier. It was a thrilling night for all of us, and I can’t express my thanks to the Lightning enough. Their philanthropy is making a difference in our community. I am a Lightning fan!

April showers bring…National Volunteer Week! HandsOn Tampa Bay (HOT), the volunteer arm of United Way, is recognizing our wonderful community volunteers at an awards ceremony and dinner later this month. Prizes will be awarded – I’ll share the winners with you next month. On Saturday, April 28, our annual HandsOn Tampa Bay Day will be held at the Bay Pines VA campus in Pinellas County. Every year I enjoy the day spent mulching, painting, visiting with volunteers and our nation’s veterans. And every year I take a few more Advil.

If you’d like to join us and find out what HOT is all about, click here for more information. You have to be 14 or older and everyone who volunteers gets a free t-shirt, breakfast and lunch and the good feeling that comes from helping out.

April also brings Art of Giving, our fabulous fund-raising gala with award-winning actress America Ferrera, live and silent auctions and purses to die for. Art of Giving is always a fun evening and the dollars raised support Summer Care, our program that provides enriching summer child care and financial education to working families. April 12 is the date and you can still get tickets by clicking here.

I hope to see you in April – either shoveling mulch at HOT Day or biding on a fabulous purse at Art of Giving.
