The early December gathering at RCS in Clearwater was not what one usually expects at a food bank. The crowd was earnest and sincere, and thankful for the work RCS does. But they sported large smiles as Progress Energy President and CEO Vinny Dolan presented a check for $25,000 to help with United Way of Tampa Bay’s Stop Hometown Hunger initiative.

Diana Baker, United Way president and CEO, accepted the check from Dolan. “The food shortage in our area is critical, and unacceptable,” she said. “The generosity of Progress Energy will help many local residents provide nutritious meals to their families as they work toward getting back on their feet.”

Duggan Cooley, RCS president and CEO, told the attendees that RCS has seen a 100 percent increase in need since 2007. More than 30 percent of those are first-time visitors. He shared the good news that the Progress Energy donation will help, especially as the new year approaches and holiday donations drop off.

Progress Energy is not stopping with a cash donation from the company. Employees at eight locations in Pinellas County held food drives throughout December with the goal of raising five tons of food in one month. Employees also served holiday meals and distributed groceries at two Pinellas locations.

“This is the time of year to think about giving,” said Dolan. “At Progress Energy, we strive to give back to the communities we serve year ‘round through foundation grants to educational institutions and social service organizations.  During this special holiday outreach, our employees are generously donating their personal time and money to support neighbors in need.  With United Way as a partner, we’re uniquely connected to help the community where we live and work.”
