Group One:  those who have enough food each day.

Group Two:  those who do not have enough food each day.

You probably are just a few minutes away from your past meal — or perhaps just a few minutes away from your next one.  If you live in Hillsborough or PInellas Counties, you probably find yourself with adequate, if not bountiful, food opportunities.

However, hundreds of people within a short drive from where you live spend a great deal of the day wondering if and when they will get a next meal.  America’s Second Harvest reports that more than 40,000 families receive food assistance in the Tampa Bay region.   One in ten homes lack enough food to feed a family three meals a day.

During the current economic crisis, food banks report that requests by hungry families are up while donations are down.  Many food banks find themselves out of food completely by mid-afternoon.   Families seeking the gift of food are finding the pantries bare.

You can help.

On November 5, 6 and 7, 2008, the Hillsborough County Fair is offering free admission to visitors who bring canned food to the fair’s UNITED WAY AT THE FAIR NIGHTS.  With one can per person, your entire family can get in to the fair and enjoy music, games, rides, livestock shows and food.  This activity is ongoing for three nights, giving you ample opportunity to get out and hit the fair.

The Hillsborough County Fair has moved to a new location of Hwy. 60 near Valrico.  The new Fairgrounds are located five miles east of Brandon at the intersection of Sydney-Washer Road and Highway 60.  Click here for a map.

A number of regional food banks will benefit from the canned goods contributed during the event.  Come out and enjoy the fair — and do a great thing for a hungry family.
