In Florida, more than 432,000 children under the age of 19 have no health insurance and many of those children live in Hillsborough County.

Florida KidCare currently serves nearly 1.4 million children, of whom 1.1 million are Medicaid customers and more than 255,000 are enrolled in MediKids, Children’s Medical Services or Healthy Kids.  Children enrolled in these programs receive regular doctor visits, dental check-ups and immunizations at little or no cost.  For additional information about enrollment in Florida KidCare, visit www.floridakidcare.org to apply online or call 1-888-540-5437 to receive an application by mail.).Please spread the word about this program — at your place of work, your place of worship, schools, and so forth. Amira Forto stood in the shade as she watched the improvements being done on her St. Petersburg home, watching volunteers work in the heat and humidity to get the job done.

The job was a home mini-makeover: complete with interior and exterior painting, plumbing and electrical repairs, and minor carpentry work. What at first glance appeared to be a weekend project from friends and neighbors of Amira was something much more. It was a product of United Way of Tampa Bay Day of Caring.

United Way Day of Caring, held on October 18th, mobilized 130 local companies and more than 2,000 volunteers to assist 58 local non-profit agencies with everything from landscaping to clean up to mini-makeovers like Amira’s.

This project was supported by more than 20 volunteers from Pinellas County Schools, and organized by the Gulf Coast Jewish Family Services, a United Way partner agency. Read the rest of this entry »
